Klein Students Code their Own Adventure at Annual Coding Event

Klein Students Code their Own Adventure at Annual Coding Event

These brilliant Klein ISD students are programming and coding their way into the future! Over 900 students from 38 schools recently put their coding skills to the test, participating in several coding challenges at this year’s annual Klein Codes event.

This year’s Klein Codes theme was ‘Code Your Own Adventure.’ It consisted of student groups attempting the district challenge of creating a multi-level (minimum of 4 levels) video game.

“This opportunity for EVERY student in grades 3-8 is phenomenal—the exceptional level of creative coding products and brilliant attention to detail, then appraised by experts in the field are unprecedented,” Advanced Academic Services Director Kathleen Plott said.

Klein ISD Coding clubs are open to all students from 3rd to 8th grade at their campuses. Each club student can participate in any challenges at Klein Codes, such as a Rubik’s Cube challenge and a Coding Quick Challenge. After each challenge, students had their projects appraised and the opportunity to win many prizes.

“These students are learning valuable life-long, 21st Century skills; even if they decide not to pursue a career in this field, this type of computational thinking will still benefit them,” Program Coordinator Jessica Jasper said. “We are the only district in the area that provides students as early as third grade the chance to pursue coding-where coding is their superpower!”

Students have been working on their coding skills throughout the school year, some so advanced that the coding clubs are looking to teach even more coding languages. These young coders’ skills aren’t limited to video games or rewriting codes; they create much more within their clubs.

“As a veteran EdTech leader working in over 38 states, no other school district is doing the type of innovative, educational coding program at this scale as Klein ISD,” Chief Revenue Officer of Skillstruck, Inc. Brian Grow said. “These projects and students are simply incredible!”

The coding doesn’t stop in the 8th grade—many student coders continue to sharpen their skills by taking advanced courses in high school. These students often come to the Klein Codes event to offer guidance to young coders.

These student coders are so impressive. We are so lucky to have such talented students in our district!
